Umeå is known as the young university city, the culture city, the festival city, the floorball Mecca, and the city of birches. It is one of Sweden’s fastest growing cities. When Umeå University was inaugurated in 1965 the city had only 40 000 residents. Today, more than 120 000 people live here. The city is also home to many growing companies, mainly in the field of biotechnology, medicine, IT, the envrionment and energy, and modern forestry and engineering industries.
